Why Root Words Matter for Vocabulary Growth

Greek and Latin roots are the building blocks of English.
By learning them, readers gain tools to unlock the meaning of thousands of words, from everyday language to advanced academic vocabulary.

Satellite Storm in the Astro-Sphere introduces roots like orb (circle), astr (star), grav (heavy), chron (time), aero (air), tele (far), and scope (look)- the foundation for words like orbit, astronomy, gravity, chronology, aeronautics, telescope, and more.

Root knowledge strengthens vocabulary, boosts comprehension, and supports success across science, literacy, and beyond - all through an exciting adventure story.

Because root words are cooler when they’re part of a quest.

Don’t Just Take Our Word for It

I read the book to my son, and we played the games at the end of the book. He didn’t know any of the roots before reading the book. I was surprised he remembered five of the roots later and even remembered some words where the roots were used. I liked that he enjoyed the book and didn’t complain.
- Jess, parent of an 8-year-old.
These books teach morphology without feeling like a lesson. The stories pulled my students in right away. The format looks and feels like a real chapter book, not a decodable which some of my older students don’t prefer too much.
- Michelle, Grade 4 Teacher
The story was interesting. I liked playing go fish and word charades.
- Ethan, Age 9.
This is a really clever series. I love how it turns morphology into something fun and adventurous for kids. The stories are packed with action, and still manage to weave in rich vocabulary and root word learning. It's the kind of resource I wish I had years ago.
- Bec, Primary School Teacher, Australia.
We read the first two Morph Explorers books at home, and my kids were genuinely interested in the stories. They kept asking what would happen next. I also really appreciate seeing a strong girl character in a science-themed story. It's such a refreshing change in children's STEM books.
- Aysha, Parent, Canada.
I absolutely loved these books. It's such an interesting idea. Too often, morphology instruction gets overlooked in schools. I am excited to see how the whole series, including social studies and maths roots, pans out. This is definitely a unique way to teach kids morphology.
- Sarah, Parent, Australia.

Educational Benefits

Is the Morph Explorers collection aligned with the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy?

Yes. The books build morphological awareness by weaving root words into engaging stories, helping readers grow their vocabulary and strengthen language comprehension, both essential parts of evidence-based reading instruction.

Is it appropriate for kids with dyslexia?

Yes. Many educators and specialists use these books to reinforce morphological awareness, which is especially important for students with dyslexia.

Research indicates that developing knowledge of root words, prefixes, and suffixes enhances reading comprehension and vocabulary, which are essential skills for dyslexic learners.

However, many traditional morphology resources are inaccessible because they create too much cognitive overload - dense texts, complicated formats, or worksheets that don't align with how dyslexic kids learn best.

All books in the Morph Explorers collection were developed by a literacy specialist with dyslexic learners in mind. The stories are designed to be engaging without overwhelming, combining narrative context, repetition, and supportive illustrations to make learning feel natural and low-pressure.

The books are written using a full alphabetic code, making them ideal for students who have completed all stages of an Orton-Gillingham (OG)–based program’s scope and sequence or who have been exposed to the full code in Structured Linguistic Literacy programs.

For students still developing their decoding skills, the books can be enjoyed as a read-aloud, helping to build vocabulary and comprehension through listening.

A high-low edition is also in development, retaining the same story and illustrations while adjusting the text to accommodate students who benefit from more accessible language levels.

Is this collection suitable for non-dyslexic learners?

Yes. While the Morph Explorers collection is designed to be accessible for dyslexic learners, morphology instruction benefits all students, not just those with learning differences.

Research shows that a strong understanding of Greek and Latin roots:

  • Accelerates vocabulary growth.
  • Improves spelling and writing.
  • Enhances reading comprehension.

Morphology is especially important for mastering Tier 2 (academic) and Tier 3 (subject-specific) vocabulary - the kinds of words students encounter in advanced texts, selective school entrance exams, and spelling bees.

Explicit instruction in morphology has been shown to lead to significant gains in vocabulary and comprehension across all student populations. The books offer all learners a playful, low-pressure way to build the morphological foundation essential for academic success, while enjoying a high-stakes adventure.
